Midlands based Rugby League clubs have come together to form a Youth & Junior Steering Group to plot the way forward to the youth and junior game accross the region.
Between 2009 and 2013, over 40 youth and junior teams played competitive Rugby League accross the region, but following a decline in Sport England funding into the game and thus a reduction of investment into the infrastructure in the region, much of the activity fell into decline.
Since then, some clubs such as Telford Raiders and Sherwood Wolf Hunt have managed to run junior teams in northern based competitions and development activity has taken place for youngsters to introduce them to Ruby League, but 2019 will see a more concentrated effort on encouraging our young people to play more matches.
The steering group has now met three times since November last year and has agreed plans for the summer, which will be announced shortly, to encourage players in the U11s, U13s and U15s age groups to take up the game and to also provide activity for U17s to be able to further their enjoyment of the game beyond their open age team involvements, which involve the re-establishement of the Midlands Origin concept which was very successful in previous years.
As part of the creation of the group, a new website www.midlandsrugbyleague.com has been launched to put a spotlight on the game in the region and the minutes and actions arising from the steering group’s meetings will also be posted on the site.
If your club is not yet involved in the steering group but would like to be, please contact us to lodge your interest.
